One demarcation often found is restoring vs non-restoring division. Can you point to anything on that wiki page that may provide some context to your question? (I'm confused over your wording, I guess, and could use another clue or two.) Also, with respect to combinatorial logic, I recall working with an engineer at Bipolar Integrated Technologies. He claimed (I never saw it myself) that they had developed a fully combinatorial way to do floating point division and had implemented it in silicon (pre-1990.) Perhaps there's a paper?
