MrFibble, you've not responded to anyone. I'm going to assume you won't respond to me, either. But the US is litigious and auto companies have deep pockets. Batteries used in EVs can be quite dangerous, as well. So there are legal reasons to protect their cars beyond reasonable degrees. But there are technical reasons, too. Batteries aren't allowed to be too deeply discharged. If it were allowed and if a user stupidly destroyed an expensive battery, the auto manufacturer (who knows better than to have allowed it) could be liable for replacement. Contact VW and just ask.
